Authentic South Indian Prawns Curry Recipe

This authentic South Indian prawns curry is a family favorite that's been perfected over generations. The combination of coconut, curry leaves, and fresh prawns creates an unforgettable dish.
Ingredients
- 500g fresh prawns, cleaned and deveined
- 1 cup fresh coconut, grated
- 2 medium onions, sliced
- 2 tomatoes, chopped
- 2 green chilies
- 1 tbsp ginger-garlic paste
- 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
- 1 tsp red chili powder
- 1 tsp coriander powder
- 1 sprig curry leaves
- 2 tbsp coconut oil
- Salt to taste
Instructions
- Grind coconut with a little water to make a smooth paste. Set aside.
- Heat coconut oil in a pan. Add curry leaves and let them splutter.
- Add sliced onions and sauté until golden brown.
- Add ginger-garlic paste and green chilies. Sauté for 2 minutes.
- Add tomatoes and cook until soft.
- Add turmeric, red chili powder, and coriander powder. Mix well.
- Add the coconut paste and 1 cup water. Bring to a boil.
- Add cleaned prawns and salt. Cook for 5-7 minutes until prawns turn pink.
- Garnish with fresh curry leaves and serve hot with rice.
Tips
- Don't overcook the prawns - they become rubbery
