Authentic South Indian Prawns Curry Recipe

This authentic South Indian prawns curry is a family favorite that's been perfected over generations. The combination of coconut, curry leaves, and fresh prawns creates an unforgettable dish.

Ingredients

  • 500g fresh prawns, cleaned and deveined
  • 1 cup fresh coconut, grated
  • 2 medium onions, sliced
  • 2 tomatoes, chopped
  • 2 green chilies
  • 1 tbsp ginger-garlic paste
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp red chili powder
  • 1 tsp coriander powder
  • 1 sprig curry leaves
  • 2 tbsp coconut oil
  • Salt to taste

Instructions

  1. Grind coconut with a little water to make a smooth paste. Set aside.
  2. Heat coconut oil in a pan. Add curry leaves and let them splutter.
  3. Add sliced onions and sauté until golden brown.
  4. Add ginger-garlic paste and green chilies. Sauté for 2 minutes.
  5. Add tomatoes and cook until soft.
  6. Add turmeric, red chili powder, and coriander powder. Mix well.
  7. Add the coconut paste and 1 cup water. Bring to a boil.
  8. Add cleaned prawns and salt. Cook for 5-7 minutes until prawns turn pink.
  9. Garnish with fresh curry leaves and serve hot with rice.

  • Don't overcook the prawns - they become rubbery
